Paul Heaton & Jacqui Abbott will perform a very special one off show at Hull’s KC Lightstream Stadium (home of the world famous Hull Kingston Rovers rugby league club) on Saturday 3rd June ’17 with support from special guests The Divine Comedy and Billy Bragg.

Paul and Jacqui will perform songs from their two top 5 albums and classic tracks from The Beautiful South and The Housemartins.  This is their first headline show announced for 2017 and is also part of the Hull UK’s City of Culture celebrations.

Martin Green, CEO and Director of Hull UK City of Culture 2017, said: “We have a superb line-up of musical events taking place next year, but Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott’s return to Hull will inevitably be one of the highlights of the summer. Paul always receives a great reception when he comes home and, in a year that is about celebrating culture in the city, it is wonderful that he will be performing Housemartins songs, which are so strongly associated with Hull. The event's location will resonate powerfully for everyone that lives here and we can expect the atmosphere to be electric.”

Paul Heaton first came to public attention in the early 80s as front man of Hull-based indie poppers The Housemartins (the same group that spawned Norman ‘Fatboy Slim’ Cook), best known for their third single ‘Happy Hour’ and their No 1 acapella Isley Bros cover ‘Caravan Of Love’.  The Housemartins released two albums ‘London 0 Hull 4’ (’86) and ‘The People Who Grinned Themselves To Death’ (’87).  In ’88 Heaton formed The Beautiful South, who released 10 hugely successful albums - ‘Welcome To The Beautiful South’ (’89), Choke (’90), ‘0898 Beautiful South’ (’92), ‘Miaow’ (’94), ‘Blue Is The Colour’ (’96), ‘Quench’ (’98), ‘Painting It Red’ (2000), ‘Gaze’ (’03), ‘Golddiggas, Headnodders & Pholk Songs’ (’04) and ‘Superbi’ (’06).   In 2001 Heaton took a break from The Beautiful South and released his first solo album ‘Fat Chance’.

The Beautiful South called it a day in 2007 citing ‘musical similarities’.  Jacqui Abbott was lead vocalist in The Beautiful South from ’94 to 2000 and she sang many of their signature hits including ‘Rotterdam’, ‘Perfect 10’, ‘Don’t Marry Her’ and ‘Dream A Little Dream’.  Paul Heaton went on to release two further solo albums: ‘The Cross-Eyed Rambler’ (’08) and ‘Acid Country’ (’10).  In 2011 Heaton wrote a musical called ‘The 8th’ based on the Seven Deadly Sins and asked Jacqui to sing one of the parts.  They have since released two acclaimed albums as a duo: ‘What Have We Become’ (’14) and ‘Wisdom, Laughter and Lines’ (’15).

WHAT THE PAPERS SAID ABOUT ‘WISDOM, LAUGHTER AND LINES’

“Glorious hymns to life’s simple pleasures….rich acerbic lyrics set against exuberant music informed by Heaton’s encyclopaedic love of pop and soul.”

The Guardian 22 Oct ‘15

“…a timeless, catchy pop album shot through with (the Alan Bennett of pop) Heaton’s razor-sharp Northern wit.”

bbc.co.uk 28 Oct ‘15

“…a smart, eclectic and outgoing album – the pair’s vocal chemistry matched by Heaton’s tart, funny, sharply observed lyrics.  There’s testifying rock’n’reggae, gospel, epic sad-eyed kitchen sink balladry, pub dub and Northern soul sass.  Smiles all round.” 4*

Daily Mirror 23 Oct ‘15

“Paul Heaton might be Britain’s most breathtakingly subversive pop star.  For 30 years he’s penned sardonic Marxist screeds, disguising them as jangly indie-pop (with The Housemartins) or drivetime-friendly MOR (with The Beautiful South).  This, his second album with old Beautiful South partner Jacqui Abbott, hides Ken Loach-style kitchen sink realism and trenchant observations behind Steely Dan chords and folksy sing-alongs.” 4*

Metro 21 Oct ‘15

“The Beautiful South’s status as mega-selling household favourites proved you can hide a lot of prickly, political wit behind pretty tunes.  But Paul Heaton deserves to be rated as one of our most acute songwriters, and his renewed alliance with former bandmate Jacqui Abbott sprinkles useful sugar on his worldview.” 4*
